UPDATE ON COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Your Union projects that a small percentage of our membership is experiencing affects because of the COVID-19 Pandemic.  Some of our Brothers and Sisters either have the virus or are on mandated or self-quarantine because of exposure to family or others who tested positive.  Some members, because of age or preexisting medical conditions, are staying home because they cannot risk exposure, which is understandable.

According to the medical experts associated with the Center for Disease Control, these next 10 days for both New York and New Jersey should see the peak for new cases.  After that, the curve is expected to flatten and we should start to see reductions.

One of the greatest concerns that we all have at this point is, “Will Our Lives Ever Get Back to Normal!”  The answer to that question is an emphatic “YES” and this is how it will happen.

First and foremost we need a treatment program for those infected, whether that treatment program is based on the drugs currently in emergency approval use or a new drug cocktail that we are working on presently.

Secondly, we need a vaccine to be distributed FREE to all who need to be vaccinated to protect them and, further, to prevent another outbreak.

Please remember, we live in a Country with the greatest medical and scientific capabilities this world has ever seen, and we have unleashed those capabilities to stop at nothing to develop a treatment program and a vaccine.   I am confident they will succeed, and I am also confident that they understand they must achieve success in an expeditious manner.

As I talk to other Union leaders throughout the Country, especially in non-foods, they are reporting massive closings and layoffs with the loss of wages and medical coverage.  We are blessed with the fact that over 95% of our members are employed by Supermarkets, Food Stores and Food Warehouses.  We actually have an excess of work, are receiving bonus pay and continue to enjoy full medical coverage.  Let’s understand that we truly deserve all we are receiving and even more because we are keeping the food chain operational for the customers.

Your Union Office is staffed and open daily to handle questions and problems.  Our Union Delegates are on duty serving the needs of the members.  We are doing our best to work smartly and work safely, just as you are so as to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Please do your best to stay positive during these difficult times.  Things will begin to get better as we flatten the curve.
