Union Initiates Voter Registration Drive to Gain Better Wages, Improved Medical Programs and Secured Pensions
Unfortunately, many of us are completely turned off by the Political System and are not registered to vote, or if registered, are not bothering to vote. We hear things like, “It doesn’t matter who is elected because it won’t change anything for me.”
Frankly, nothing could be further from the truth. Your Local Union and International Union have tremendous strength, in some areas, to deliver a better lifestyle. We are also almost powerless in other important areas, without political input and assistance. Look at what’s happening around this country in some of the most important areas of concern:
1. Medical Benefit Programs for many workers are being reduced while the requirement for weekly or monthly participant co-pays are bing added
2. Pension Plans are being eliminated, reduced or restructured to provide meaningless retirement benefits
3. Roadblocks are being erected to prevent unions from organizing, which undermines the strength of our bargaining power with Union Employers
4. Illegal immigrants are flooding our Country and being paid less than a living wage, which places pressure on Union Contracts
5. Legislative proposals are being discussed, which would tax the value of our Medical Program Benefits
6. The integrity of the Social Security Program is in jeopardy
7. The financial sector of Corporate America has implemented improper credit standards, which has destroyed the housing industry
8. The middle class in this country is shrinking on an annual basis because of heavy tax burdens and favorable treatment of the wealthy
9. We are embroiled in a war which will require our children and grandchildren to make sacrifices to pay for a reduction of the National Debt
10. Global warming is threatening our very existence and will make significant changes in the manner in which we live
11. Outrageous gasoline and energy costs are taking food off the table of American families
All of the situations enumerated above can only be changed through the power of the ballot, by changing the administration in Washington to one that promotes the interests of working Americans. The strongest of Local Unions and the most militant of International unions cannot deliver a better lifestyle without a friendly and pro-worker form of Government.
In order to increase participation and interest among our membership in registering to vote, UFCW Local 464A has implemented the following program:
1. Any Member who registers to vote will have his or her name placed into a drawing for one of the following prizes:
1st Prize - $500.00
2nd prize - $250.00
3rd Prize - $100.00
4th Prize - $ 75.00
5th Prize - $ 50.00
2. Any Shop Steward who registers 10 or more Members to vote will have his or her name placed into a drawing for a $500.00 prize
