General Foods and Nestle Recall Some Products Due to Meat Recall
General Mills is recalling 35,000 cases of its Progresso Italian Wedding soup and Nestle SA of Switzerland is recalling selected boxes of its popular Hot Pockets brand. Both recalls are a result of the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing scandal that has caused the largest recall of meat in U.S. history - 143 million pounds of beef. The Soup and Hot Pockets are believed to contain some of the recalled beef.
According to the Wall Street Journal (Feb. 27, 2008), each case of Progresso soup contains between six and twelve cans. In addition, a quantity of 49,000 cases of Hot Pockets Philly Steak & Cheese sandwiches and Croissant Crust Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches have been recalled. Each case contains eight boxes.
The Hallmark/Westland beef recall followed a Food and Drug Administration order after video clips surfaced showing disabled or otherwise sick cows being led to slaughter. Slaughter of these so called "Downer" animals for human consumption is a violation of FDA regulations.
